چکیده

The paper derives formulas for the energy J(n) that a station’s radio consumes in order to transmit 1 MB of data in an IEEE 802.11 network with n stations. Calculations show that J(n) grows approximately linearly with n, for n ≥ 4. The useful energy consumed in successful transmission and reception of data is constant; the remaining energy is wasted. When n = 15, the waste amounts to 80 percent of total energy, and this proportion grows with n. More than 60 percent of the waste is due to overhearing, i.e. reception of packets intended for another station. Overhearing can be eliminated by using information in RTS/CTS packets.

Modeling Energy Consumption in Error-Prone IEEE 802.11-Based Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

In the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer protocol, there are different trade-off points between the number of nodes competing for the medium and the network capacity provided to them. There is also a trade-off between the wireless channel condition during the transmission period and the energy consumption of the nodes. Current approaches at modeling energy consumption in 802.11based networks do not conside...

Improving Energy Efficiency Via Multi-Rate Diversity in 802.11 Wireless Networks

Energy efficiency is one of the most important concerns in wireless networks because wireless clients usually have limited battery power. The aim of this work is to reduce energy consumption by exploiting multi-rate diversity in 802.11 wireless networks. An important observation is that “probabilistic rate combination” in transmission can significantly reduce power consumption. We formulate the...

An Efficient Power Saving MAC Protocol for IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

To support mobility, mobile devices must be powered by batteries with limited energy. Thus, energy-efficient management becomes one of the most important design issues in mobile wireless networks. A well-designed energy-efficient MAC protocol for mobile wireless networks should be developed for both minimum energy consumption as well as maximum data throughput. IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is based...

Mathematical Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Energy Efficiency

Abstract— Mobility and portability are the major advantages that IEEE 802.11 wireless networks offer over their traditional counterparts, i.e. wired Ethernet networks. However, when nodes are mobile or portable units, power consumption becomes a primary issue since terminals are usually battery driven. In this paper we propose an analytical framework to investigate the energetic cost of communi...

An energy efficient security protocol for IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Security protocols in wired and wireless networks make use of computationally intensive cryptographic primitives and several message exchanges for authenticated key exchange at the session-level and data confidentiality and integrity at the packet level. Moreover, changes in connectivity require mobile stations to repeatedly authenticate themselves thereby expending more energy. In this paper, ...
